Reference Checks – Their Importance and How to Perform Them

free recruiting softwareReference checks are an important part of the overall hiring process. Without them, you may never know how valuable a candidate might be to your company. You’re able to talk with previous managers or supervisors to get a better idea of what this person might bring to the table. They can also help you determine if they’re best suited for the available position within your organization.

Checking references will help ensure you hire the most qualified person for the role. You’ll be able to avoid bringing on someone that might have failed a probation period or offered poor performance in their previous position.

Trusting a reference is a great way to validate information found on an application or resume. While you don’t want to always assume the applicant isn’t being truthful, it’s a good idea to always check to make sure. In addition, you’ll get a better idea of just how much their knowledge, experience and skills will help with the success of your company.

If you’re ready to start using references to check on potential candidates, be sure to ask questions that will offer answers that can be used to make an informed decision on whether or not to hire them. When you’re ready to contact a reference, be sure to have your information ready, before the phone call, so that you don’t miss anything. Below, you’ll find a list of questions that will help you when getting a reference for a candidate. Performing Reference Checks

  • Is the applicant suitable for the available position, in your opinion?
  • Was there ever a need to discipline or reprimand this candidate? If so, could you tell me about the situation?
  • In relation to other employees, would you please describe their absenteeism record?
  • What were their responsibilities?
  • What salary was being offered when their employment ended?
  • What was the applicant’s start date?
  • How long were you associated with them?

This question list is a great example of the questions you can ask to help in your decision of whether or not to hire a specific candidate.
