The Ideal Millennial Work Environment

staffing agency softwareMillennials are the generation of people who came into adulthood in the 2000s. They’re far different than any other living generation, as many of them grew up in a world that focused on video games, social media and other Internet sources for entertainment. They’ve witnessed some of the biggest and best technological advances of all time.

Because of this, millennials have a different work ethic than others. They’re looking for alternative work environments, as well. In fact, an Intelligence Group study of millennials has found that:

  •  64% of them say it’s a priority for them to make the world a better place.
  • 72% would like to be their own boss.
  • If they do have to work for a boss, 79% of them would want that boss to serve more as a coach or mentor.
  • 88% prefer a collaborative work-culture rather than a competitive one.
  • 74% want flexible work schedules.
  • 88% want “work-life integration,” which isn’t the same as work-life balance, since work and life now blend together inextricably.

Also called Gen Y, millennials are looking for freedom in their career and the company the work for. For example the large corporation HubSpot, offers beer on tap for their employees to enjoy any time they’d like. While they’re able to drink excessively if desired, there’s an understanding that professional millennials know that no more than a beer or two a day is acceptable.

Even more, companies are now offering employees naps, in-house coffee shops and video game break rooms to help motivate them to do the best job possible. When they’re treated fairly and with respect as well as given incentives to work hard, millennials are happy and more productive than other generations.

Unfortunately, most companies are not conforming to Gen Y and their preferred way of working. According to americanexpress.com, “While most companies are still struggling to integrate millennials into the workplace, there’s a huge benefit to getting young people on your team. However you feel about hiring millennials, they’re the largest generation in U.S. history, which means they make up the largest number of consumers. They’re also experts when it comes to reaching out and connecting with others in their generation.”

Providing beer fridges or nap and video game rooms seems completely contrary to what most professionals are used to. It raises many questions among other generations. Do millennials understand what it’s like to work hard? Are they more productive because of their desire for a better work place? Should my company accept their needs and wants and offer it to them?
